Cochineal Maguey Bag

Cochineal Maguey Bag

Traditionally crafted by an older generation of Mexican artisans to supplement field work income. These bags are handmade of maguey fiber from the agave plant and sustainably died with cochineal: an insect that lives on the paddles of prickly pear cacti.

We work with six different artisan makers of these traditional handmade maguey bags. They are typically made by an older generation of artisans as a means of supplemental income, which they make while they are passing the time tending to their livestock.

The cochineal is sourced from a farm in the Oaxaca valley, and the bags are dyed by hand. In all, this piece helps to provide a positive steam of income for over 7 Mexican artisans.
